This is a wooden grave marker that was used during the war to mark the temporary resting place of a fallen SS man.  The body would have later been relocated to a more permanent grave, as the wood was not designed to last more than a few months in the harsh environment.  It is difficult to make out the name of the fallen soldier associated with this marker.  Originally from the Jerome Blake collection.  Also, thanks to resarcher Richard Lambert of Canada, I am now able to provide additional information about the fallen SS man that this marker identified.  His name was SS Scharfuhrer Hugo Nieratschker, born in 1909 and KIA in 1943.  A Google search actually captures his name in a couple of obscure but recent history books from Eastern Europe.  So further research is both needed, and will likely produce additional results.  Please note: this piece was broken during shipment during the last auction, so upon return, we repaired it and there is no obvious sign (other than hairline crack) to know that it was even broken.
