Rare WWI Combat Rememberance stein, rare because most of these have broken in the intervening years. Features bold coloration, an ornate top lid with an imperial eagle, and the words "Wir Deutsche fürchten Gott, aber sonst nichts in der Welt!" This translates "We Germans Fear God, but nothing else." The phrase is an excerpt from one of Bismarck's most famous speeches. The quote was celebrated and recalled by German nationalists ad nauseam . But in fact, this moving phrase comes at the very end of the speech, and advances Bismarck's statement that the German Reich, a "saturated nation," must avoid being involved in dangerous coalitions and conflicts. Moreover, the famous statement is followed by one that was ignored by most Germans: "It is already the fear of God that makes us love and care for peace." This was Bismarck's last major Reichstag speech on foreign policy before his Dismissed in March 1890. Great history item!
