DESCRIPTION

This is not an actual award piece, as there were only 5 1914 Grand Cross of the Iron Cross awards made:von Mackensen, von Hindenburg, Ludendorff, Field Marshall Leopold von Bayern, and Kaiser Wilhelm II (an honorary award). These Grand Crosses are all accounted for. All were produced at the Kaiser's orders, by Wagner and are identical, except for the hand finishing. This is a copy, thought to be made during the period or, at least, pre-1945.  The cross has an iron core which shows age and some scaling with some pits to the "W" on the obverse. The frame is made correctly, being 2 parts plus the eyelet on the top arm, which is separately attached. There are no silver markings nor manufacturer markings present. The front details are crisply defined as is the beading of the arms. The reverse has the "FW" under the crown in block letters, rather than the semi gothic lettering found on the awarded pieces. The acorns under the oakleaf bundle are correctly 'X' formed. The core details on the reverse are also sharply defined. The ribbon is not a Grand Cross pattern, which would be a larger version of the standard 1914 Iron Cross II Class ribbon:black with white stripes. This is like the Pour le Merite ribbon: black with silver bullion stripes and off white threads.

Award manufacturers would have displays in their shops showcasing the current and historic awards, and a number of contemporary copies of decorations were produced for these displays.  Awards such as this 1914 Grand Cross would be on shown so the population could view decorations that they otherwise would not have a chance to see.

The cross shows age and handling with signs of having been cleaned at some point in the not too recent past. An excellent contemporary example to use as a filler for an unobtainble awarded cross.

This was purchased from E-Medals, and the ribbon was purchased seperately from Previtera seperately.
