Souvenir "Flick your ashes on Hitler's Hearth" ashtray. The ashtray has an inlaid piece of marble from the great fireplace in the main room of the Berghof; the ashtray itself is a miniature version of the actual Berghof fireplace and hearth. The size is about 6 1/2 X 5 1/2 X 1 1/2 inches. The coloring in the incuse lettering is intact and there is no damage to the marble or the rest of the ashtray.  On the underside the ashtray retains its intact decal with the explanation of the history of the marble and facsimile signatures of the men who took the marble. Alfred J. Weatherhead, Jr., president of the Weatherhead Company, an important automobile parts manufacuring company that made precision aircraft components for the Navy starting in 1937 and expanded its aviation defense work during the war, was in Germany a month after VE day with on a US Army technical assignment to investigate German manufacturing methods.  He, and employees George H. Gufferel and Frederick M. Bock removed about 30 lbs. of marble from the actual Berghof fireplace, had it cut into small pieces and set into the advertising ashtrays. Some of these were made of metal but this is the more difficult to find heavy ceramic version. Excellent condition and hard to find with intact reverse decal and original wool pads.
