Gau Essen Badge as awarded by Gauleiter Terboven. The die struck badge is finely detailed with the III. Reich symbol for the city of Essen:  A sword and crossed mining hammer and pick with swastika on the sword handle. The badge retains most of its gilt finish. The reverse retains its original needle hinged pin and retaining cylinder.  The badge is unmarked as are most, if not all, of the gold versions. Note: it has recently been suggested on a couple of collector web-sites that this style of Gau Essen badge is a post war example produced by the Souval company in Austria. The main difference is stated to be that the corners of the hammer and pick don't touch the sword blade on copies but do on original examples. So far there has been no conclusive evidence to either prove or disprove this theory, and the quality of this badge is much higher than the typical post war Souval products. In my opinion this is a period badge however the controversy should be noted to any potential bidder.
