DESCRIPTION

This rare Honor Goblet (Ehrenpokal) is an alpaka (plated) version, in mint condition ... no dents, scratches, or wear to the finish.  The silver has retained a deep grey patina throughout.  It was awarded to Hans Schalanda, who joined the Luftwaffe in 1939.  He was a Stuka pilot who flew in Malta, and on the Eastern Front.  He received his goblet on April 1, 1942, and then the German Cross in Gold two months later.  After over 800 flights, he was awarded the Knight's Cross in 1943.  After nearly 900 combat missions, he was awarded the Oakleaves to the Knight's Cross, in October 1944.  He was killed at the very end of the war on March 26, 1945 during a battle over Russia, a victim of flak guns near the city of Kustrin.  He was attacking enemy tanks when he was shot down.  During his career, he flew 933 combat missions, was wounded twice, and shot down 7 times.  An amazing career for an expert aviator.
